FAQ: Window Awnings

< Return to Previous Page

How do these awnings operate? top >
Durasol’s line of custom made window awnings can operate in a variety of manners. Most SunCatchers® can be made stationary or in retractable formats. If retractability is desired, most models can be ordered with a simple exterior pull cord. SunGuard® models are all designed to be retractable. Unit operations include manual pull tape; manual hand crank, or the unit can be motorized and further made automated for maximum ease of use.

What keeps the fabric taut? top >
On retractable SunCatchers®, gravity keeps the fabric taut. If the homeowner chooses to have their SunCatchers®, “fixed” (non-retracting) stay bars are added to the framework to keep the fabric taut. SunGuard® models feature spring-loaded arms that constantly apply downward pressure that keeps the fabric taut.

Can I motorize a SunGuard®? top >
Nothing could be more convenient than simply flipping a switch or pressing a remote and watching your SunGuard® awning roll down effortlessly. Once the preset position is achieved, the unit will stop automatically. You may also stop the unit in any position by simply pressing the button a second time. Research has shown that a motorized awning is used four times as much as a manual unit. With Durasol's new line of electronic accessories, your local dealer can create the system that fits your unique needs.

How long will the fabrics last? top >
Today's 100% acrylic woven fabrics are designed to provide the homeowner with years of solar protection against rot, mildew and excessive fading. Plus, all models are sewn with Gore™ Tenara® thread, extending seam life. Durasol's warranty covers all the products they produce for a period of 5 to 10 years, depending on the manufacturer's warranty. Life expectancy, when cleaning and care instructions are followed, should be 8 to 12 years on retractable awnings, slightly less on fixed SunCatcher® models.

What happens during the winter months? top >
Many homeowners continue to use their window awnings all year round, providing glare control during the winter. Some homers enjoy the rays of winter and decide to simply retract the units.

The SunCatcher® is a three season window awning that provides protection from the elements. In areas where snowfall or high winds occur, we highly recommend that the awning be removed to avoid damage.

How will the awning mount to my home? top >
Factory trained professionals locate the structural framework of the home and pre-drill installation bracket holes through any siding to tie in directly to wall studs or any solid mounting surface. They pre-drill their holes to avoid cracking and add silicone caulk to the hardware and brackets for leak prevention.

What does an average SunGuard® or SunCatcher® cost? top >
Due to the custom-made nature of all our shading systems we produce and the uniqueness of each application, prices cannot be given without verified measurements and actual site inspection. Your local representative will meet with you for an in-home consultation to design an awning that's right for you! The typical custom-made SunCatcher®, professionally installed, will typically range from $400 up. SunGuards® typically range from $400 up depending on the size and manor of operation. Again, with a wide range of available sizes and a large variety of product options, prices are dramatically effected - so very rarely is one system exactly the same as the next. Your local representative has several different models, types of mounting brackets, and different motorization options to meet your unique needs and provide you with a trouble-free shading system that just right for you.

How long does it take to be installed once my order is placed? top >
Durasol guarantees a normal order will be shipped within 11 working days of receipt of order. Allowing for shipping time and the dealer's present workload, your awning should be installed in four to six weeks, sometimes sooner.

Does Durasol offer any other types of Shading products? top >
